A warm welcome in the US to the ArtsLink International Fellows 2024!👐

10 artists, activists, curators, and arts leaders from Afghanistan, Georgia, Poland, Romania, Ukraine, and Tajikistan are in NYC this week for an intense program of meetings and networking.

An evening of art, performance, and dialogue on October 10 at @magnumfoundation will cap the Fellows’ sojourn in NYC, before they embark on their individual residencies across the US.

We are concluding the introductory series about our ArtsLink International Fellows with the shout out to the Fellow from Ukraine, Hnat Zabrodskyy. Hnat is a cultural manager and a legal expert specializing in organizational transformation and development.

@hnatello06 leads legal operations at the Museum of Contemporary Art MOCA NGO and the Pavilion of Culture CF. He steers the Ukrainian Art Ecosystem Legal Project (UALR) focused on developing new regulations and institutions for a sustainable framework for the Ukrainian cultural ecosystem. Hnat is engaged in the development of common memory practices and dialogue-related projects as an independent expert and as a senior scholar for the Kyiv School of Economics.

This year, Hnat co-organized, together with CEC ArtsLink, a series of workshops in Lviv, Kyiv, Berlin and Warsaw for artists and cultural leaders from Ukraine and the cultural workers displaced by Russia's war against Ukraine. These dialogues focused on strategies for Ukraine’s cultural reconstruction, created platforms for ongoing discussion, shared knowledge, and added a wide range of artists’ perspectives to the strategic planning for the upcoming ArtsLink Assembly: Beyond Greener Grass.

Hnat is an avid sportsman - this summer he participated in KYIVMAN 2024, the first extreme triathlon in Ukraine.

Meet Lia Dostlieva, Ukraine, an artist, cultural a

Meet Lia Dostlieva, Ukraine, an artist, cultural anthropologist, and essayist working across a wide range of media. Lia’s artistic and research practice investigates collective trauma, Anthropocene, decoloniality, and the agency of vulnerable groups.

@lia_dostlieva most recent collaboration is currently on view in the Ukrainian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Comfort Work, a video project co-created with Andrii Dostliev, confronts the viewer with the stereotypes, representation and the impact of images of Ukrainian refugees made for the Western media during Russia's war against Ukraine.

Another recent project by Lia, Book of Long Objects (2023), is a collection of images and short stories that traces three generations of one Ukrainian family through wars and forced displacement—from the Soviet rule to the Nazi occupation to the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war. Originally from Donetsk currently occupied by the Russian proxy forces, Lia now lives in Poland.

Lia's art and curatorial work have been widely exhibited internationally. She also writes for e-flux Journal, Eurozine magazine, Kajet Journal, and Blok Magazine.

As an ArtsLink International Fellow 2024, Lia is hosted by our network partner Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, CA. Founded in 1974 by artists Archana Horsting and Yuzo Nakano as an international artist residency program, @kalaartinstitute has grown to a 15,200 sq. ft. facility in the historic West Berkeley Heinz building. With a wide range of specialized equipment for artists working in and across all forms of printmaking, digital media, film/video, book arts, photography, public art, installation, and performance, Kala's mission is to be a workshop of ideas rooted in the local community through artist residencies, arts education, exhibitions and public programs.

Kala Art Institute has been hosting ArtsLink International Fellows since 2006. Ellen Lake, Co-Director at Kala Art Institute, runs the Fellows’ residencies. We appreciate Kala’s commitment to transnational cultural mobility and look forward to the results of this Fellowship.
