Artem Loskutov

Public Art

Loskutov is well-known throughout Russia as the founder of the unique May Day happening, Monstration, which invites the public to take to the streets with humorous, often absurd signs and slogans. The goal of a Monstration is to shake up a boring political procession and to have fun.  In 2004, Loskutov and other members of the group CAT (Contemporary Art Terrorism) organized the first May Day happening Monstration in Novosibirsk. In 2007, after the breakup of CAT, he founded the group Kiss My Babushka, of which he was a member until 2014. Since 2012, he has been a member of the working group of the MediaImpact Festival of Activist Art. He was awarded the Innovation Prize, the Russian Contemporary Visual Art Award, for Monstration in 2010. (Loskutov’s US visa application was subjected to additional vetting because of a fabricated, politically motivated drug conviction in Russia in 2009. He was not able to participate in the Art Prospect Fellowship study trip.)
