VisArt Talk: Trends in Contemporary Art from Central Asia and Russia

CEC ArtsLink presents a talk by young Kazakh, Russian, and Tajik arts managers and curators about the current state of contemporary art in their countries.


Margarita Amvrosova, Director of the Tengri-Umai Gallery in Almaty, Kazakhstan will speak about the development of contemporary art in Central Asia and the challenges faced by her gallery, which was founded twelve years ago and today is the city’s only contemporary art gallery.

Mikhail Surkov, Deputy Director of the newly created Perm Museum for Contemporary Art, will discuss exciting new initiative to build Russia’s largest museum of contemporary art in the abandoned River Station Hall and the city’s ambitious plans to stimulate the city’s rebirth as the cultural capital of the Ural Region.  www.permm.ru

Elena Yaichnikova, a Moscow based independent curator and art-critic will speak about the city’s vibrant contemporary arts scene, in particular the recent Moscow Biennale and the leading alternative art spaces – Winzavod and the Garage. www.moscowbiennale.ru

Other Arts Leadership Fellows participating in the discussion include: Yulia Avgustinovich, Director, 33+1 Art Studio (St. Petersburg),  Anna Basanova, Coordinator, Bactria Cultural Center (Dushanbe), Natalia Nikolaeva, Project Manager, Regional Agency for Creative Initiatives (Yaroslavl), Alexandra Semenova, Curator of International Programs, Krasnoyarsk Museum Center (Krasnoyarsk), and Tatiana Shishova, Visual Art Coordinator, Pro Arte Foundation (St. Petersburg).

An informal reception will follow the open discussion.
